Description
This vibrant soccer-themed sheet cake features a sturdy butter cake base topped with a lush field of vanilla buttercream grass. It is an impressive yet achievable centerpiece perfect for birthdays, combining classic flavors with creative piping techniques.
Ingredients
- 3 packages premium butter cake mix (or equivalent homemade batch)
- 500g unsalted butter, chopped and softened
- 4 cups pure icing sugar, sifted
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons warm water
- Pinch of salt
- Green gel food coloring
- Soccer figurines (players, nets, and ball)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced) and line a 23 x 33cm deep rectangular cake pan with baking paper.
- Prepare the cake batter according to package directions, pour into the pan, and bake for about 1 hour or until a skewer comes out clean.
- Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Beat the softened butter in a stand mixer for 6-8 minutes until pale, then add icing sugar, vanilla, salt, and warm water and beat for another 6-8 minutes.
- Reserve a small amount of white frosting for lines, then tint the rest with green gel food coloring.
- Level the cake with a serrated knife, flip it onto a board, and apply a thin green crumb coat to seal in moisture.
- Pipe green grass tufts over the entire cake using a grass nozzle, then add white boundary lines and the soccer figurines.
Notes
To achieve the most realistic grass texture, pull the piping bag away quickly as you release pressure to create sharp blades. Using gel coloring instead of liquid is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the buttercream for piping.
