Description

This eye-catching patriotic dessert features a tender white cake base infused with vibrant ribbons of red and blue gelatin for a moist, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Finished with a light whipped topping and festive swirls, it is the perfect centerpiece for any summer celebration or holiday gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 box high-quality white cake mix (plus ingredients required by package)
  • 1 package (3 oz) Berry Blue gelatin
  • 1 package (3 oz) Cherry gelatin
  • 2 cups boiling water (divided)
  • 1 cup cold water (divided)
  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed
  • Red and blue gel food coloring
  • Patriotic-themed sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Bake the white cake in a 9×13 inch pan according to the package instructions and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack.
  2. Using a straw or the handle of a wooden spoon, poke holes across the surface of the cake in a grid pattern, spaced about one inch apart and three-quarters deep.
  3. In two separate heat-proof bowls, dissolve the blue gelatin and cherry gelatin each in 1 cup of boiling water, then stir 1/2 cup of cold water into each mixture.
  4. Carefully spoon the blue gelatin into the holes of specific sections or stripes of the cake, then repeat with the red gelatin in the remaining sections, taking care to keep the colors distinct.
  5. Cover the cake and refrigerate for at least 3 to 4 hours, or ideally overnight, to allow the gelatin to set and infuse the crumb.
  6. Spread the thawed whipped topping evenly over the cake, use toothpicks to swirl small drops of food coloring for a decorative effect, and garnish with sprinkles before serving.

Notes

To ensure the most vivid and distinct color patterns, make sure the cake is completely cooled before adding the gelatin. Wiping your knife with a damp cloth between each slice will help maintain the pristine white appearance of the topping when serving guests at your event.
